Our Values

Environment at the heart of Svalbarði

Enjoying Svalbarði helps the fragile Arctic environment

Svalbarði is committed to producing the best water to drink in a sustainable and responsible manner. The fine beverage originated with one man’s fascination with the Arctic wilderness; as such, the preservation of the polar region is at the forefront of the Svalbarði’s interests. The sustainable water is therefore as good for the environment as it is for the palate.

Svalbarði and the Environment
The outsized role Svalbard plays in understanding global warming is largely unknown to the general public. Over a century of arctic climate and glaciology records on the archipelago provide rare research opportunities. With Svalbard already witnessing alarming climate changes, environmental action is at the core of Svalbarði's values and actions.

Svalbard is at the epicenter of global warming research and mitigation, making it the perfect place to base production of a wholly sustainable water. As well as being the best water to drink, Svalbarði is Carbon Neutral certified and donates a percentage of every sale to support the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The Vault has capacity to secure millions of seeds representing every important crop variety in the world. In the face of climate change, it is the ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply.

Environmental Responsibility
Svalbarði takes a three-pronged environmental approach:

First do no harm:
Svalbarði utilises only icebergs that would otherwise melt into the sea. We are certified Carbon Neutral by supporting improved water infrastructure in Uganda and Malawi and a wind farm in western China to offset all our carbon emissions. Our wooden cap is sourced only from sustainable forests, and the glass bottle is reusable and fully recyclable.

Educate:
We use our social media and marketing platforms as tools to teach the public about the importance of the global warming research and mitigation work that is being done in Svalbard. Because Svalbarði is based in the archipelago, we have a front line view of the rapidly changing environment, such as glacial retreat, reduced sea ice, and the challenges facing arctic wildlife like the polar bear. We consider it our duty to help others understand the global impact of what is happening in Svalbard.

Mitigate:
We partner with the Crop Trust to endow the permanent preservation of crops in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. In the face of climate change, the Vault is the ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply. The vault has the capacity to secure millions of seeds, ensuring the representation of every important crop variety in the world. Svalbarði donates a percentage of every sale to the Seed Vault.
