The Best Bottled Water Brands of 2023

Best Bottled Water Brands

The best bottled water is the packaged drinking water which best meets the needs and preferences of the drinker given their taste preferences, health needs, and the situation the water will be used in. Because bottled water comes  from different sources, in different types of containers, and has different mineral and quality characteristics, there is no single best bottled water brand for all circumstances. But there are winners for specific situations.

Some bottled water brands are healthier than others, with the two main differentiators being purity and mineral content. Some water brands are more enjoyable than others, with the three main differentiators being packaging, taste, and unique sources. Healthiness is an objective measure that can be measured, while enjoyment is a subjective measure that varies from person to person. Availability is a determinant of what the best bottled water in any environment is since there are tens of thousands of brands and many have limited distribution regions.

Some of the best bottled water brands include Three Bays from Australia for health thanks to its high and diverse mineral content, Badoit from France for its ability to gently introduce people to sparkling water, Fiji for its unique silica content, Svalbarði from Norway for its rounded luxury offering including rare iceberg source and beautiful bottle, and Evian from France for its ability to share a unique mineral water around the world in multiple packaging types. There are many other bottled waters which are best for specific circumstances, which we shall discuss below.

1. Svalbarði Polar Iceberg Water [No longer available]

Bottles of Svalbardi Water
Description: Svalbarði is an ultra-low-mineral, rare, ultra-premium iceberg water. It is the world’s northernmost bottled water. The icebergs are individually gathered by net at 79° north in Norway’s Svalbard islands. Svalbarði is known for its award-winning glass bottle and is particularly suitable as a complement or replacement for premium alcoholic beverages. It is a carbon-negative brand that helps save 100 kg of arctic ice per bottle sold by funding greenhouse gas reducing projects.

Taste: Svalbarði has a super-low mineral content with a TDS of 21 mg/l. This is because it is ancient snow, preserved as ice inside glaciers for up to 4000 years. It never touches the ground before calving into the sea as an iceberg where it is gathered shortly before melting into the sea forever. This gives it an ultra-light, fresh taste, and a smooth mouthfeel. It is described as being like the taste of snowflakes landing on the tongue. Because it was preserved as ice, it is protected from modern pollution and is extremely pure.

Bottled Water Company: Svalbarði was founded in 2015 with the express purpose of helping to fight global warming and save Svalbard and the Arctic. The company is based in the arctic outpost of Longyearbyen.

Bottled Water Availability: Svalbarði was first introduced in 2016 and is sold worldwide via the company’s website, online by water specialist distributors, and at high-end hotels and restaurants. Because of the difficulty of obtaining it, it is priced on par with products such as fine wine at €95 per 750 ml bottle (approximately $100).

Svalbarði Pros: Light flavor, beautiful presentation, unique source, high purity, global availability, environmentally positive.

Svalbarði Cons: Ultra-premium price.

Recommendation for Svalbarði: Svalbarði Polar Iceberg Water is the best bottled water for fine dining, unique gifting, and special occasions.

2. Fiji

Bottle of Fiji Water

Description: Fiji water is a medium-mineral still artesian water from the Fiji islands in the South Pacific. It begins as rainwater in the clean air of the South Pacific. It slowly seeps through volcanic rock into an aquifer from which it is tapped.

Taste: Fiji bottled water has a TDS of 222 mg/l. Its most notable mineral is its silica content which gives it an ultra-smooth mouthfeel. At 93 mg/l, it has one of the highest silica levels of any bottled water. Silica is beneficial for bone, skin, hair, and nail health as shown by multiple studies among which are a 2004 study from the Rayne Institute of St. Thomas’ Hospital in the UK, a 2005 article in the journal Archives of Dermatological Research, and a 2016 meta-analysis from the Universidade de São Paulo in Brazil.

Bottled Water Company: Fiji was founded in 1996 and was the most important brand that kicked off a new wave of growth in the American premium water segment.

Bottled Water Availability: Fiji water has become widely available throughout the United States and many other countries. It is available only in PET bottles with a distinctive square design. Available sizes are 330 ml, 500 ml, 700 ml sports bottles, 1 liter, and 1.5 liters. A case of twelve 1 liter bottles sells on their website for $32.

Fiji Pros: High silica content, smooth mouthfeel, wide availability.

Fiji Cons: Only available in plastic.

Recommendation for Fiji: Fiji water is the best bottled water for skin and hair health.

3. VOSS

Bottle of Voss Water

Description: Voss water is a low-mineral, premium, artesian water from southern Norway. It is actually from southern Norway near the city of Kristiansand and not the western Norwegian village of Voss. Because of southern Norway’s solid granite geology, the water does not pick up many minerals. The sparkling version has bicarbonate added to it.

Taste: Voss still water has a TDS of 44 mg/l with a very light taste and smooth mouthfeel. The addition of bicarbonate and sulfate to the sparkling version gives it a more salty and bitter taste and raises the TDS to 290 mg/l.

Bottled Water Company: Voss was founded in 1998 by Norwegian entrepreneurs Ole Christian Sandberg and Christopher Harlem who saw a gap in the market for a high-end water. The iconic design of their bottle is the brand's key differentiating factor and was critical to their early success as a brand that was only sold in glass at premium hospitality locations.

Bottled Water Availability: Voss has branched out to the mid-range of the market and is available in plastic bottles and flavored versions with bottle sizes ranging from 330 ml to 800 ml widely available in retail locations. The US market was a priority since the beginning but Voss is now available in dozens of countries around the world. A case of twelve 850 ml bottles in PET sells for $27 on Amazon which is a fairly typical price.

Voss Pros: Iconic bottle design, light taste, wide variety of sizes and flavors.

Voss Cons: No longer seen to have as premium a reputation as early days.

Recommendation for Voss: Voss is the best bottled water for stylish packaging at a low premium price.

4. Evian

Bottle of Evian Water

Description: Evian is a medium-mineral still spring water from France. The source is a spring in the french town of Évian-les-Bains where water that originally fell as snow in the French Alps emerges after 15 years of filtering through rock layers. They recently introduced an unflavored sparkling version and even have a facial spray (which yes, is just the water).

Taste: Evian’s taste is divisive with many people loving its slightly heavy mineral taste while others find it off-putting. Some find the mouthfeel smooth while others find it slimy. It has a TDS of 345 mg/l and its distinctive flavor and texture come from a relatively high level of bicarbonates (360 mg/l) and calcium (78 mg/l). The company’s two centuries of international success show that tens of millions of people love it.

Bottled Water Company: The source was originally found in 1789 by a local French aristocrat by the name of Marquis de Lessert who enjoyed drinking from the spring while out walking. In the days before clean tap water systems, it was common to build spas around pure springs, which Evian did in 1806. Bottling for sales beyond the town began in 1826 and the product has gone on to become one of the best-known premium bottled water brands in the world.

Bottled Water Availability: Evian has a range of versions in glass and plastic ranging from 330 ml to 1.5 liters. They regularly produce special editions in collaboration with artists. It can be purchased from a wide variety of retail, hospitality, and e-commerce locations around the world. A pack of twelve 750 ml PET bottles sells on Amazon for $24.

Evian Pros: Famed history, unique taste, wide variety of packaging offerings.

Evian Cons: Some people dislike its unique taste.

Recommendation for Evian: Evian is the best bottled water brand for covering a wide variety of uses from on-the-go hydration to fine dining.

5. Acqua Panna

Bottle of Acqua Panna Water

Description: Acqua Panna is a low- to medium-mineral, premium, still spring water from the Tuscany region of Italy. After falling as rain it travels 14 years through an aquifer before emerging from a spring near the Villa Panna, a hunting estate that was owned by the famous Medici family in the 1400s. Acqua Panna is one of the largest mineral water brands in the world and is especially popular in restaurants.

Taste: Acqua Panna has a TDS of 150 mg/l per its lab reports. While not a super-low level, it is mild enough to maintain a light taste and smooth mouthfeel. The relatively moderate mineral level is because it mostly passes through sandstone which imparts fewer minerals than limestone but more than granite.

Bottled Water Company: Acqua Panna was first bottled for sale by hand in the 1860s. In 1927 the plant was upgraded to a commercially automated scale, and in 1994 the company began exporting to the US.

Bottled Water Availability: Acqua Panna has a range of bottles in glass and plastic ranging from 250 ml to 1 liter. It is especially popular in restaurants but can be found in retail and e-commerce stores as well. A pack of twelve 1 liter PET bottles on Acqua Panna’s official Amazon store sells for $19.

Acqua Panna Pros: Light taste while still imparting mild minerals, modestly premium bottle design suitable for fine dining at modest price.

Acqua Panna Cons: Not a strongly differentiated taste.

Recommendation for Acqua Panna: Acqua Panna is the best still bottled water for modest-priced premium appearance in fine restaurants.

6. Poland Spring

Bottles of Poland Spring Water

Description: Poland Spring is a low-mineral spring water bottled from ten different sources in the US state of Maine. It is a popular mass-market brand only sold in plastic bottles. The brand has reduced the plastic in its bottles by 30%.

Taste: Poland Spring has a light and airy taste. Even though it comes from multiple spring sources, they have similar flavor profiles and none of them have a TDS higher than 74 mg/l, ensuring flavor that is consistent to most peoples’ palates.

Bottled Water Company: Poland Spring’s business began as a guest house on the site of the original spring in 1797. The popular water from the site was first sold across New England in 1859 in barrels, and then an iconic “Moses” bottle in 1876. As demand grew over the decades, international offices as far away as Egypt and the Philippines were established. It eventually became a mass-market, PET-only brand owned as part of a portfolio by larger companies. BlueTriton is the current owner.

Bottled Water Availability: Poland Spring PET bottles ranging from 8 ounces (237 ml) to 5-gallon water cooler containers can be purchased across the United States in stores and online for home delivery. A case of 48 half-liter bottles is sold on Amazon for $30.

Poland Spring Pros: Consistent flavor despite multiple sources, wide range of sizes, available across the US.

Poland Spring Cons: Only available in plastic.

Recommendation for Poland Spring: Poland Spring is the best bottled water for consistently light flavor in a mass-market, multiple-source brand.

7. Mountain Valley Spring

Bottle of Mountain Valley Spring Water

Description: Mountain Valley Spring is a medium-mineral, premium spring water from the Ouachitas mountains at Hot Springs National Park in the US state of Arkansas. The water spends 3500 years passing through lays of limestone, shale, and sandstone which provide its mineral profile. It is known for its iconic green glass bottle and has been served to US presidents, senators, and celebrities for more than a century. It has still and sparkling versions.

Taste: Mountain Valley Spring Water has a TDS of 220 mg/l. While that is not very high for a mineral water, its taste and mouthfeel are similar to more mineral-rich waters. This is because of its calcium content of 67 mg/l, which is similar to Evian which has a TDS more than 50% higher. It was named the best tasting bottled water in the US or world at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting 8 times from 1997 to 2021.

Bottled Water Company: Mountain Valley Spring Water began in 1871. A pharmacist named Peter E. Greene named the water Mountain Valley, with the company officially formed in 1883. It was first served at the White House in 1920. It is privately owned and now has a network of regional distributors under private ownership.

Bottled Water Availability: Mountain Valley Spring Water is sold in its iconic green glass bottle and solid glass water cooler jugs, aluminum cans, and PET bottles. It is available across the United States via a network of regional distributors, retail and hospitality locations, and e-commerce stores. A twelve-pack of 1-liter glass bottles sells on the Mountain Valley website for $24.

Mountain Valley Spring Pros: Unique mineral taste loved by many, unique classic bottle, long historical tradition.

Mountain Valley Spring Cons: Relatively few healthy minerals for a water with a higher mineral taste.

Recommendation for Mountain Valley Spring: Mountain Valley Spring water is the best brand for a classic bottle and taste.

8. Icelandic Glacial

Bottles of Icelandic Glacial Water

Description: Icelandic Glacial is a low-mineral spring water from the Hlíðarendi Spring in southwest Iceland which is part of the Ölfus Spring System. Rainfall and snow replenishes the spring system each year, most of which naturally flows into the sea, with the Hlíðarendi Spring being the only site where it flows to the surface and from where it is collected and bottled. It is the only bottling facility we have found whose brand name is visible from space on the roof. Icelandic Glacial is known for its unique glacial-ice-shaped clear bottles and is available in still and sparkling versions.

Taste: Icelandic Glacial’s low TDS of 62 mg/l gives it a light and fresh taste like snow, with a smooth mouthfeel. It is similar in taste to Voss and Saratoga.

Bottled Water Company: Icelandic Glacial water was founded in 2004 by Icelandic entrepreneur Jon Olafsson and has been part of the country’s rise to prominence as a global example of environmental awareness and clean nature. It was the first bottled water company to receive Carbon Neutral certification from Natural Capital Partners (the same organization which certified Svalbarði as Carbon Neutral) and has a facility powered purely by geothermal and hydroelectric sources.

Bottled Water Availability: Icelandic Glacial is available in glass and PET sizes from 330 ml to 1.5 liters, and a 5 liter bag-in-box “refrigerator pack”. They have made major strides into international markets including the US. The brand is sold in many retail locations as well as via e-commerce on Amazon and water and beverage specialty sites. A case of twelve 1 liter bottles sells on their own site for $30.

Icelandic Glacial Pros: Light and clear taste, beautiful bottle in multiple formats, carbon neutral.

Icelandic Glacial Cons: Provides few healthy minerals.

Recommendation for Icelandic Glacial: Icelandic glacial is the best bottled water for a combined fresh taste and bottle design.

9. Topo Chico

Bottle of Topo Chico Water

Description: Topo Chico is a medium- to high-mineral, naturally carbonated sparkling water from Monterrey, Mexico with a classic-style glass bottle. It was founded in 1895 and is sourced at the base of a mountain named Cerro del Topo Chico. There is a legend that the daughter of Aztec Emperor Moctezuma was ill but recovered after making the long journey from central Mexico to bathe in and drink the water. The drink had long been popular in northern Mexico in Texas, but in the late 2010s the brand’s popularity spread throughout the US, gaining a cult following that led to occasional shortages.

Taste: Topo Chico has a TDS of 630 mg/l, which is in the middle of the range for sparkling waters which on average have a higher TDS than still waters. Its sodium level of 41 mg/l is not particularly high for a carbonated water, helping it be more appealing to consumers who do not like overly salty sparkling waters. The natural carbonation is enhanced with some additional carbon dioxide, producing an effervescence that is popular with the brand’s fans.

Bottled Water Company: Topo Chico was acquired by Coca-Cola in 2017 who quickly massively expanded US sales beyond its traditional Texas heartland. It has become one of the fastest growing and most popular sparkling water brands in the US.

Bottled Water Availability: Topo Chico is available in its classic-style glass bottle with metal cap or PET bottles. It is stocked in many grocery and convenience stores, restaurants, and can be bought online at Amazon or the company’s website. A twelve-pack of 12-ounce glass bottles is available on Amazon from Whole Foods for $13.

Topo Chico Pros: Widely-loved flavor, iconic traditional glass bottle, cult following.

Topo Chico Cons: Cult following.

Recommendation for Topo Chico: Topo Chico is the best sparkling water for a mildly-flavored introduction to naturally carbonated waters.

10. Waiakea

Bottles and Box of Waiakea Water

Description: Waiākea is a low-mineral, alkaline, artesian water from Hilo on the sparsely populated big island of Hawaii. The water originates as snowfall and rain on the nearby 13,680 foot tall Mauna Loa volcano. From there it filters through volcanic rock until it reaches the Kea’au aquifer from where it is tapped via a well. The company is deeply environmentally conscious, not only being Carbon Neutral certified, but offering an array of environmentally packaging solutions including aluminum, “OceanPlast” recycled plastic, and bag-in-box.

Taste: Waiākea water has a light taste and mouthfeel thanks to its low TDS level of 82 mg/l, and a slightly sweet aftertaste. The reason it has a low TDS despite passing through mineral-rich volcanic rock is that it takes less than 30 days for it to pass from the mountain into the aquifer where it is tapped. While Waiakea’s silica content of 35 mg/l isn’t as high as Fiji, it is enough to impart a slight smoothness to the water texture.

Bottled Water Company: Waiākea water was founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Ryan Emmons. They have received criticism for utilizing the same aquifer source as the local municipal water. This is a bit deceptive as they have their own well tapping into the aquifer and are not bottling processed tap water. They are a triple bottom line company with numerous projects dedicated to environmental and social causes, as well as profits.

Bottled Water Availability: Waiākea water is sold in aluminum, recycled plastic, and bag-in-box with sizes ranging from 330 ml to 15 liters. It is available on the company’s website, Amazon, water specialty e-commerce sites, and retailers across the US ranging from Walmart to Whole Foods. A six-pack of 670 ml aluminum bottles sells on their website for $25, or a six-pack of 700 ml recycled plastic bottles is $18.50.

Waiakea Pros: Genuine and effective environmental and social commitment, pleasant light taste.

Waiakea Cons: Difficult to find outside of the US.

Recommendation for Waiakea: Waiākea is the best bottled water for local environmental and social initiatives.

11. Perrier

Bottle of Perrier Water

Description: Perrier is a medium-mineral, naturally carbonated, premium spring water from Vergèze, France. The water and carbon dioxide are captured separately and recombined before being bottled in the iconic green, pear-shaped bottle. The company began in 1863 and for many decades was primarily sold in the UK and the US. Perrier was one of the early premium bottled waters, growing particularly popular in the 1970s and 1980s. It is now one of the world’s best-selling mineral waters, available in 140 countries.

Taste: Perrier has a TDS of 475 mg/l, a bicarbonate level of 390 mg/l, and calcium content of 147 mg/l. The Fine Water Society describes the carbonation as “big, loud bubbles” and “fireworks in your mouth”. Because the bicarbonate partially offsets the sour influence of carbonic acid from the big bubbles, the taste is moderate with neither an overpowering minerality or lightness. It pairs well with meals like chicken which are neither light or heavy on the stomach.

Bottled Water Company: Perrier is owned by Nestlé Waters who purchased the brand in 1992.

Bottled Water Availability: Perrier sells glass, PET, and aluminum versions ranging from 200 ml to 1 liter. They have an unusually small 200 ml glass bottle as well as a unique slim aluminum can. Perrier is available through virtually every retail, hospitality, and e-commerce channel where water can be found. A twelve-pack of 1-liter PET bottles can be purchased on Amazon for $24, or a 4-pack of 330 ml glass bottles for $4.

Perrier Pros: Balanced mineral flavor that doesn’t overwhelm, classic bottle design.

Perrier Cons: Losing premium image from its move into cheaper plastic and flavored waters.

Recommendation for Perrier: Perrier in glass is the best moderate-priced premium bottled water for fine dining settings.

12. Deer Park

Bottle of Deer Park Water

Description: Deer Park is a low- to medium-mineral mass-market still spring water bottled from sources in 4 different states along the US East Coast. It is owned by the same company that owns Poland Spring and Ice Mountain, but because the sources are so varied, the taste can vary substantially from region to region. They produce a sparkling version.

Taste: Deer Park’s TDS runs anywhere from a super-light 12 mg/l to a medium-mineral 170 mg/l. It usually does have a noticeable slight mineral taste and weight on the tongue, suggesting the sources tend to be at the higher end of the reported TDS range.

Bottled Water Company: Deer Park began as a local spring water in Deer Park, Maryland after the American Civil War. A popular spa was built around the spring, but when it closed the bottled water continued to be sold. The brand was expanded to multiple sources in the 1990s in order to increase the volume of sales. It is owned by BlueTriton Brands who own Ice Mountain and Poland Spring for sale in different regions.

Bottled Water Availability: Deer Park PET bottles ranging from 8 ounces (237 ml) to 5-gallon water cooler containers can be purchased across much of the eastern United States in stores and online for home delivery. A case of 24 half-liter bottles is sold on Amazon for $19.

Deer Park Pros: Inexpensive hydration that is natural spring water rather than the processed bottled tap water often found at this price point.

Deer Park Cons: Inconsistent mineral content, only available in plastic.

13. San Pellegrino

Bottle of San Pellegrino Water

Description: San Pellegrino is a high-mineral, premium, sparkling spring water from the Lombardy region of Italy. It acquires its minerals as it passes through limestone and volcanic rock during the 30 years it travels through the Italian Alps before emerging from a spring in the township of San Pellegrino Terme. The water is artificially carbonated.

Taste: San Pellegrino has a high TDS of 1109 mg/l. Relatively mild and long-lasting carbonation means the strong mineral flavors stand out. Including the saltiness of its 549 mg/l of sulfate (which aids digestion), the slight bitterness of its 136 mg/l of bicarbonate, and the chalky taste and texture of its 208 mg/l of calcium.

Bottled Water Company: San Pellegrino was founded in 1899 but people had already been bathing in and taking home bottles of the local spring water for much of the 19th century. Today the company sells more than 1 billion bottles per year in 150 countries.

Bottled Water Availability: San Pellegrino has become one of the most widely available premium mineral waters in the world. It is particularly prominent in the fine dining space where it has become nearly synonymous with the idea of bottled water for the table. It is available in glass, PET, and aluminum cans ranging in size from 250 ml to 1 liter and can be found in a wide array of retail, hospitality, and e-commerce channels. Retail prices are very affordable, with a twelve-pack of 1 liter PET bottles available on Amazon for $19 or a single 1-liter glass bottle for $2.29 from Whole Foods.

San Pellegrino Pros: Pleasant mineral taste, healthy mineral content, elegant design, inexpensive.

San Pellegrino Cons: Overly ubiquitous such that it blocks the availability of other waters on restaurant menus.

Recommendation for San Pellegrino: San Pellegrino is the best bottled water for showing skeptical restaurants it is worth offering natural waters and not just tap water.

15. Saratoga Spring Water

Bottle of Saratoga Spring Water

Description: Saratoga Spring is a low-mineral, naturally carbonated, premium spring water from upstate New York in the United States. A still version is made and both are bottled in a distinctive cobalt blue bottle. The 21 springs in the area were thought for centuries by Native Americans and European settlers to have healing powers. In the 1800s and early 1900s, the area became one of America’s most popular and wealthiest spas. The water was bottled and sold beginning in the late 19th century.

Taste: Saratoga Spring Water has a low TDS of 74 mg/l which gives it a light taste and the still version a smooth mouthfeel. The natural carbonation gives strong bubbles which make the sparkling version it an excellent non-alcoholic champagne alternative and match for heavier foods such as steak.

Bottled Water Company: Saratoga Spring Water Company (SSWC) was established in 1872 and has gained a wide following in the US and being exported to markets such as China. It has at various times been owned by Anheuser-Busch, Evian, and various investment firms and private individuals. It was sold to BlueTriton Brands in 2021, the same company which owns mass-market brands such as Poland Spring and Deer Park.

Bottled Water Availability: Saratoga Spring Water is sold exclusively in beautiful cobalt blue glass bottles of either 12 or 28 fluid ounces. It is sold in many premium restaurants, especially in the US, and is available through many e-commerce channels. Cases of twelve 28 oz bottles of still or sparkling sell for $38 at water specialist distributor Aqua Maestro in Florida.

Saratoga Spring Pros: Beautiful cobalt blue bottle, light taste, champagne-like bubbles in sparkling version, storied history and source.

Saratoga Spring Cons: Higher price than direct competitors.

Recommendation for Saratoga Spring: Saratoga Spring Water is the best all-around American premium bottled water brand.

16. Gerolsteiner

Bottle of Gerolsteiner Water

Description: Gerolsteiner is a very high mineral, naturally carbonated artesian water from Germany. It picks up its minerals and natural carbonation from the volcanic rock it seeps through. Just one liter provides ⅓ of an adults’ daily calcium needs and ¼ of an adult’s daily magnesium needs. It is Germany’s most popular mineral water and they produce a still version.

Taste: Gerolsteiner has a very high mineral content with a TDS of 2527 mg/l. The mineral flavor is very strong, which combined with the carbonation produces a heavy taste and mouthfeel. The high bicarbonate level of 1817 mg/l does help offset the sourness that carbonation creates because bicarbonate neutralizes carbonic acid.

Bottled Water Company: Gerolsteiner was founded in 1888 and began exporting to the US in 1890 and Australia in 1895. They are Germany’s largest exporter of mineral water, and have specifically developed lighter glass bottles for export which cuts down on the product’s carbon footprint.

Bottled Water Availability: Gerolsteiner is widely available in Germany and is sold in 40 countries around the world. They have glass and PET bottles ranging from 500 ml to 1.5 liters, with the 750 ml glass bottle their flagship product. Whole Foods sells a 750 ml glass bottle online for $3.49.

Gerolsteiner Pros: Very healthy mineral content, unique and bold flavor and mouthfeel.

Gerolsteiner Cons: Some people find the flavor overwhelming.

Recommendation for Gerolsteiner: Gerolsteiner is the best sparkling bottled water to provide healthy minerals at a level appropriate for daily drinking.

17. Liquid Death

Can of Liquid Death Water

Description: Liquid Death is a low mineral artesian water from the Austrian mountains sold primarily in the US that takes an in-your-face heavy-metal-themed marketing approach. They use the slogans “Murder your thirst” and “Death to plastic” and package the water in a 16.9 ounce (500 ml) “tallboy” can common in beer brands. It targets a young customer base, especially those in the straight edge punk lifestyle. They use edgy branding and advertising, aiming to get people to drink water instead of energy drinks, alcohol, or soft drinks. It comes in both still and sparkling versions.

Taste: Liquid Death has a TDS of 170 mg/l which gives it a very mild mineral taste. The sparkling version uses 5 grams per liter of CO2, a lower carbonation level than the 6 - 8 grams per liter in sodas. This produces a milder mouthfeel than sparkling waters like Perrier. The pH of still Liquid Death is 8.1 and the sparkling pH is 5.

Bottled Water Company: Liquid Death was founded by former Netflix executive Mike Cessario with sales starting in January 2019. They have raised $34 million in funding and are steadily expanding their product line and distribution channels.

Bottled Water Availability: Liquid Death is sold only in aluminum tallboy cans. Originally it was only sold through their website, but it is now in retail outlets including Whole Foods and 7-11. The price on their website is $18 for a 12-pack.

Liquid Death Pros: More environmentally friendly aluminum, fun branding helping people to switch to water, inexpensive.

Liquid Death Cons: Little information about the water quality available.

Recommendation for Liquid Death: Liquid Death is the best bottled water for getting the younger generation to embrace water as an enjoyable, socially conscious beverage.

18. Badoit

Bottle of Badoit Sparkling Water

Description: Badoit is a high-mineral, naturally sparkling spring water from St. Galmier, France. The spring has been known since Roman times and has a long history of home and restaurant consumption in modern France.

Taste: Badoit has a high TDS of  1200 mg/l. It has 1300 mg/l of bicarbonate which helps offset the sour impact of carbonic acid. It has healthy levels of calcium at 190 mg/l and magnesium at 85 mg/l. Its natural carbonation is gentle, but additional CO2 is added to give it a bolder profile. It is not a challenging taste or mouthfeel for those not used to sparkling water, so it is an excellent introduction to sparkling waters.

Bottled Water Company: Badoit was founded in 1837 and today is owned by multinational food giant Danone. The company decided to stop selling in the UK in 2019 to prevent over-drawing its aquifer, with frequent droughts having occurred recently in the region.

Bottled Water Availability: Badoit is available in its iconic green glass bottle in 330 ml and 750 ml, as well as PET in 500 ml and 1 liter bottles. It can be purchased online through water specialty distributors and Amazon and is available in many premium restaurants. Availability in the US is limited and prices higher than the past, with a 20-pack of 330 ml glass bottles selling for $59.99.

Badoit Pros: High content of healthy minerals, beautiful glass bottle, gentle flavor and mouthfeel.

Badoit Cons: Limited supply in the US and UK.

Recommendation for Badoit: Badoit is the best bottled water brand to introduce people to high TDS sparkling waters.

19. Hildon

Bottle of Hildon Water

Description: Hildon is a medium-mineral, artesian well water from the UK. It picks up its taste during a 50-year journey through chalk layers in the English countryside. Hildon has a Royal Warrant, meaning it supplies one of the UK’s royal households. It is available in both still and sparkling versions.

Taste: Hildon has a TDS level of 350 mg/l and a pH of 7.9, giving it a slight mineral taste without tipping over into a medicinal flavor. It picks up 100 mg/l of calcium from the chalk layers it passes through, meaning the mineral taste is on the creamy side. The sparkling version uses very gentle bubbles, so the mouthfeel is best suited for pairing with lighter foods.

Bottled Water Company: Hildon was founded in 1989 by Christian Heppe who purchased the Hildon Estate property where the water is located in 1954.

Bottled Water Availability: Hildon is sold in glass and PET bottles ranging from 330 ml to 1 liter. It is available in 36 countries in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. It is especially prominent in the restaurant and hospitality sector. It can be found online at many water distributors and Amazon. US distributor Aqua Maestro sells a 12-case of 750 ml glass bottles for $37.

Hildon Pros: Healthy calcium level, pleasant light carbonation in sparkling version, understated elegant bottle.

Hildon Cons: Not everyone likes the calcium-influenced mineral flavor.

20. Vichy Catalan

Bottle of Vichy Catalan Water

Description: Vichy Catalan is an ultra-high mineral, naturally carbonated spring water from the Catalonia region of Spain. It emerges from its spring at a constant 60 °C. It was first bottled in 1889 and, like many spring waters of the day, a spa was built for visitors to the springs. It is the best-selling sparkling water in Spain and is exported to other countries as well.

Taste: Vichy Catalan has an extremely high TDS of 2900 mg/l and carbonation defined by large, powerful bubbles. Most of the minerals impart salty flavors with 1097 mg/l of Sodium, 2081 mg/l of bicarbonate, and 584 mg/l of chloride. The end result is a water that some have described as being like seawater exploding in your mouth. The taste and mouthfeel are challenging for those not used to it. Drinking it when eating heavy foods such as salty meats helps balance the flavor.

Bottled Water Company: Vichy Catalan’s founder Dr. Modest Furest Roca noticed that sheep drinking from a spring at Caldes de Malavella were particularly healthy. He purchased the property in 1881 and Vichy Catalan’s journey began. The company now owns multiple water and beverage brands, as well as a hotel and spa focused on hydrotherapy.

Bottled Water Availability: Vichy Catalan is sold in an instantly recognizable bespoke glass bottle, PET bottles, and an aluminum can. Sizes ranging from 250 ml to 1.2 liter. It is sold in 35 countries on every continent but Antarctica. It can be purchased online from water specialist distributors and Amazon. US distributor Aqua Maestro sells a 12-case of 1-liter glass bottles for $45.

Vichy Catalan Pros: Iconic textured bottle, rich in electrolytes, unique flavor.

Vichy Catalan Cons: Challenging flavor and mouthfeel for those not used to it.

Recommendation for Vichy Catalan: Vichy Catalan is the best water for pairing with heavy foods like steaks and cured meats.

21. Antipodes

Bottle of Antipodes Water

Description: Antipodes is a low-mineral, still artesian water from New Zealand. There is a still version as well. The water takes 50 to 300 years to filter through volcanic ignimbrite rock before it is tapped via an artesian well in a sparsely populated area near the town of Otakiri. The brand was designed to fill a need in the New Zealand fine dining market for a domestic premium table water. The unique, short, and wide bottle shape was modeled on traditional New Zealand beer flasks, but with a modern minimalist twist. Antipodes was the world’s first to be carbonzero certified.

Taste: Antipodes has a low TDS of 130 mg/l, leaving it with a light and fresh taste with a smooth mouthfeel. The largest mineral component is 73 mg/l of silica which does not impart a strong taste and further adds to the smoothness of the mouthfeel. The sparkling version has small, softly beaded bubbles.

Bottled Water Company: Antipodes was founded by New Zealand restauranteur Simon Wooley in 2003. He felt it made no sense to only sell premium waters imported all the way from Europe so he sought out and found a high-quality water source.

Bottled Water Availability: Antipodes is available in 500 ml and 1 liter glass bottles in still and sparkling. There are formal distributors in 9 countries, and can sometimes be found via water specialty distributors in other countries. It can be found on Amazon for delivery in the US, with a six-case of 1 liter bottles selling for $65.

Antipodes Pros: Unique modern design, pleasant lightly mineralized taste.

Antipodes Cons: Limited availability outside New Zealand.

Recommendation for Antipodes: Antipodes is the best bottled water concept for modern dining from a holistic design and taste perspective.

22. Three Bays

Bottles of Three Bays Water

Description: Three Bays is a high-mineral, still, spring water from Australia’s Mornington Peninsula outside Melbourne. It is unusual for a still water to have such a high mineral level, but Three Bays spends 2000 years passing through mineral-rich red soil inside a 600 million-year-old water catchment. It is available in a sparkling version.

Taste: Three Bays has one of the most unique flavors and textures of any bottled water: a uniquely creamy, dairy-like taste and mouthfeel. This is because of not just its high TDS of 1300 mg/l (highly unusual for a still water), but because it has a wide range of different minerals including 23 of the 24 minerals considered essential for human health. It is rich enough in electrolytes to be an effective replacement for sports drinks when exercising.

Bottled Water Company: Three Bays was founded by husband and wife team Olaf Lyche and Dayle Purcell in 2015. They purchased a holiday house outside of Melbourne and discovered a natural spring the previous owner had used for irrigation. When they tested the water, they discovered its remarkable qualities and got to work creating the brand. It has become one of Australia’s top emerging water brands, experiencing a breakthrough when it appeared in the popular Netflix show “Down to Earth with Zac Efron”.

Bottled Water Availability: Three Bays is available in glass bottles of 330 ml or 750 ml, a 10 liter bag-in-box, and 475 ml pouches. It is sold in a growing number of top Australian hotels, restaurants and retail outlet, and is now being exported to the US, UK, and Germany. A case of 12 can be purchased from Salacious Drinks in the US for $66.

Three Bays Pros: Unique dairy-like taste and mouthfeel, e-commerce availability in select key markets.

Three Bays Cons: Limited distribution.

Recommendation for Three Bays: Three Bays is the best bottled water for providing healthy minerals and electrolytes at a level appropriate for daily drinking.

23. Nevas

Bottle of Nevas Water

Description: Nevas is a super-premium, high-mineral, sparkling, artesian water from Germany. It is referred to as a “curated” cuvée water because two carefully selected artesian well sources have been selected and blended. The brand is intended specifically as a non-alcoholic champagne alternative for celebratory situations and is priced accordingly.

Taste: Nevas provides little information about the mineral content, but we know it has an extremely high calcium content of 620 mg/l and the TDS appears to be high at over 2000 mg/l. The experience of opening the bottle has a similar cork popping sensation as champagne and the bubbles have a fine-pearl texture.

Bottled Water Company: Nevas Water was founded in 2017 by German entrepreneur Nicholas Steuer and has been growing via collaborations with ultra-high-end venues and media collaborations in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Bottled Water Availability: Nevas is only available in solid black glass bottles of 330 ml, 750 ml, and 1.5 liters. They sell special editions in collaboration with artists for up to €1500 per bottle. Pricing on their website and at water specialist distributor Fine Liquids is €22 for a standard 750 ml bottle. They are sold in high-end retail and hospitality locations in Europe. Nevas is not yet available in the US.

Nevas Pros: Unique source, unique design and opening experience that fits in premium celebratory environments.

Nevas Cons: Expensive.

Recommendation for Nevas: Nevas is the best bottled water for experiencing the celebratory style of champagne.

24. ROI

Bottle of ROI Water

Description: ROI is a super-high-mineral, naturally carbonated spring water from Slovenia. The spring located in Rogaška Slatina was known since at least Roman times and the water travels through the earth for 3400 years before reaching it. According to legend the spring was created when the mythical winged horse Pegasus struck the ground with his hoof. ROI water has been bottled since 1647 and the attached Rogaška Spa and Health Center has been popular amongst royals and the wealth since that time.

Taste: ROI has an extremely high TDS of 7481 mg/l and an extreme taste to match. 1100 mg/l of sodium make it very salty, and 1100 mg/l of magnesium (the highest of any water tracked by the Fine Water Society) give it a strong metallic taste. Many people do not get enough magnesium, but less than half a liter of ROI can provide a person’s full daily needs and one should drink it in moderation. Its extreme flavor means most people prefer it in moderation, sipping rather than gulping.

Bottled Water Company: ROI was founded in 1647 and has a long history of being enjoyed by royalty and aristocrats. The attached Rogaška Spa resort was established in 1803. In recent years, ROI has not been sold much outside of Slovenia, but the owners are now expanding distribution into North America, Europe, and Asia.

Bottled Water Availability: ROI is available exclusively in glass bottles of 500 ml or 750 ml. Salacious Drinks in the US sells a six-case of 500 ml bottles for $100.

ROI Pros: Elegant bottle, supplement-level magnesium and calcium, unique taste.

ROI Cons: Limited distribution, taste overwhelming for some people.

Recommendation for ROI: ROI is the best bottled water brand for replacing magnesium supplements.

It is available in a sparkling version as well and is notable for its sleek Scandinavian minimalist design.

Taste: Iskilde has a TDS of 330 mg/l with 80 mg/l of calcium and 155 mg/l of bicarbonate. This gives it a distinctive smooth texture with a clear but subtle mineral flavor.

Bottled Water Company: Iskilde was founded in 2005 by Danish entrepreneur Jan Bender who was one of the founders of the Fine Water Society.

Bottled Water Availability: Iskilde is currently available in 330 ml and 670 ml glass bottles, but they sometimes produce in bioplastic bottles. What should You Consider while Choosing the Best Bottled Water?

The factors to consider while choosing the best bottled water are the water quality, the circumstances the water will be served in, taste preferences, and health goals.

Water quality: All bottled water is legally required to be of safe, drinkable quality. Be aware of recalls or companies with reputations for unsafe practices, though such problems are exceedingly rare. Some waters do have extra low levels of impurities, far beyond regulatory requirements. The level of nitrates in Svalbarði is 99.9% lower than legal requirements, for example.

Serving circumstances: If you are serving water at a celebration, giving a special gift, or enjoying a personal affordable luxury, you should consider unique premium waters like Nevas or Svalbarði. If you are seeking water for frequent hydration on the go, seek any natural water in your price range, which might vary from Poland Spring to Fiji. If you want to explore the varied tastes, mouthfeel, packaging, and terroir of natural waters, try as many waters as you can find. Always reuse or recycle the bottles.

Taste preferences: If you enjoy light waters, low TDS brands such as Icelandic Glacial, Voss, or Saratoga are pleasant. If you enjoy a noticeable but not overwhelming taste, medium TDS brands such as Evian, Hildon, and Iskilde fit well. And if you enjoy very strong tastes, high TDS waters such as Three Bays, Gerolsteiner, Vichy Catalan, and ROI (the latter three all sparkling) will give your palate a strong experience.

Health goals: Mineral water is a good tool to supplement mineral intake because the body easily absorbs minerals delivered via water. You should consider how much of any mineral you need and how much of that mineral is available in a specific brand. For example, the recommended daily intake of calcium for an adult is 1000 mg. Drinking two liters of French sparkling water Badoit provides 38% of that requirement, and two liters of Gerolsteiner provides 70%. On the other hand, low TDS waters provide virtually no minerals and are more valuable for their taste.

This diagram shows the benefits different minerals provide to the body.

Electrolyte Functions in Body

What Type of Water Should You Drink?

The type of water you should drink is the one that meets your health, taste, and use case needs the best. Broad categories of the types of drinking water to consider include the following.

  • Tap Water
  • Spring Water
  • Glacier Water
  • Mineral Water
  • Sparkling Water
  • Purified Water
  • Distilled Water
  • Flavored or Infused Water
  • Alkaline Water
  • Well Water
  • Bottled Water
  • Deep Sea Water
  • Iceberg Water
  • Rain Water
  • Fine Water

Many of these categories overlap, and within each category are a wide range of water quality, health, and packaging parameters.

The type of water you should drink for helping with good health is usually mineral water because it contains healthy nutrients that are easily bioavailable to the body.

The types of water you should drink for the best purity are distilled water which has had impurities removed, and iceberg water which has been naturally protected from pollution inside glaciers.

The type of water you should drink for daily hydration is tap water because of its low price, easy availability, and government-ensured safety.

The type of water you should drink for celebrations, fine dining, and gifts are the most premium waters in the Fine Water category, including brands such as Svalbarði, Nevas, ROI, or Antipodes.

What is the Healthiest Water to Drink in 2023?

The healthiest water to drink in 2023 is Three Bays mineral water. It has both extreme purity as shown by some of the lowest nitrate readings in the world at 0.008 mg/l, and higher levels of a wide array of healthy minerals than other brands. While some brands have higher amounts of individual minerals, Three Bays is unique in having high levels of many minerals.

This chart shows the amount per liter of key healthy minerals in Three Bays versus the median of all 277 Fine Water brands.

High Mineral Levels in Three Bays Versus Other Water Brands

Iceberg water such as Svalbarði has similar purity as Three Bays, with lab tests often unable to detect any nitrates. But iceberg water does not provide the added benefit of delivering healthy minerals to the body since it is made up of ancient snowflakes that never interacted with the ground to pick up minerals the way spring or artesian waters do. Svalbarði does have a light taste many love because of its low minerality.

Can you comment on the minerality of SmartWater and Lifewater? These brands are very popular in the US. I am trying to make the decision of switching to Three Bays or staying with SmartWater or Lifewater alkaline waters.
