Svalbard on the screen

Svalbard is one of the most unusual places on Earth and its spectacular scenery and challenging climate has attracted film makers from around the world. Several dramatic movies and fascinating TV series have been made on Svalbard. Here is a selection of some of the best.


Orion's Belt, 1985. An adventure thriller about three fishermen on a wilderness expedition who stumble upon a concealed Soviet surveillance station. The film is often the first thing that comes to mind for Norwegians of that generation when they hear the word Svalbard. Versions were made in both Norwegian and English.



When the Light Comes, 1998. A romantic adventure drama about a young woman spending the dark winter season with her fur trapper boyfriend.



Svalbard: Life on the Edge, 2016. A fascinating 10-part BBC series following the lives of ten people who've made Svalbard their home. Season 2 is due to start filming in February.



Far North, 2007. Beautifully shot in the arctic wilderness, a soldier's unexpected arrival has a profound affect on two women's simple existence.



Fortitude, Sky 2015. A psychological thriller series. Not filmed on Svalbard but the story is set on the island and revolves around the investigation of a brutal murder. Season 2 launches on the 26th of January.



In addition, documentaries about and filmed in Svalbard abound. If you have ever seen a documentary about the Arctic, the odds are good it was filmed in full or part here. A quick search on YouTube and other video services will turn up numerous stunningly shot short and longer films very worth your time.
